We are a family run business and have been trading in Bangor Main Street since 27/1/1922. On this date our great-grandfather took over the business and went on to buy the property on 18/5/1935. We are now in our 4th generation of butchers at this premises but we have been researching our family history and have discovered that 2 further generations were also butchers......Edward, our great-great grandfather and Andrew, our great- great- great grandfather.......together with quite a number of other family members. So it is definitely a vocation that has been passed down through the generations and we hope this shows in the pride and care we take in our business.
We have lots of new product lines and ideas to share with you including a new hot food counter, a click and collect service, delicious new dishes and product lines from our deli counter and fresh meat range and the introduction of our loyalty card system sees customers being rewarded for shopping with us.
2015 was a very successful year for us winning 2 North down Business Awards and coming out on top at the Northern Ireland butcher of the year awards. We will strive to build on this success by continuing the high quality of service that our loyal customers expect from us.

A Blast from the past: Dated February 1982
The business is a family concern the proprietors being father and son - Martin and David Mawhinney. It was established in 1922 and has had plenty of time throughout the years to gain an excellent reputation for quality meats and a high degree of customer commitment among the natives in Bangor.
David Mawhinney is quick to point out that the secret of their success lies in maintaining high standards of hygiene in the shop, offering the highest standard of customer service and of course award winning produce. Business appears to be booming at Mawhinneys and to cope with the heavy demand for their products they employ 15 staff. David Mawhinney tells me that every day is busy but especially Friday and Saturday as customer stock up for the weekend.
I noticed that every type of product conceivable in a butchers shop was on display form roasts right down to tripe and oxtail but when asking which of their products was the most popular the Mawhinneys had no hesitation choosing their sausages.
David Mawhinney adds - "There are four fridges at the rear of the shop, the largest one containing 30 sides of beef, the care that we take in the initial stages in selecting the right type of carcase ensures top quality meat for our customers for the past five years we have bought the supreme and housewives champion at Allams".
Mawhinneys butchers is certainly worth a visit that's if you don't mind taking your place in the queue!
